when you try the most basic of strategies and encircle your targets on all sides... but suddenly... death from above! ... :/ is everybody else missing this point except me? \:

that's just gotta suck when you don't have air-superiority in your own region! ;>

seriously? these guys are WAY WAY too concentrated on 'mech ground pounders'... where's the g-dang Space Forces? nobody in the NAC is developing 'blow MF up on the ground from Orbit!' weapons? they can make big giant robos run around, on the ground, go bang bang! , givem AI to run round go bang bang! without a guy inside their guts MAKING them run round go bang bang!

buuuut! one damn mech who can fly! blows allllll those robos up who run round on ground go bang bang!

doh! Homer Simpson forehead slap! did you morons forget THE AIR! technology, flying, that Americans INVENTED, the Wright Brothers? helloooo? nobody remembering how the gooood ol USA INVENTED AND PERFECTED AIR-SUPERIORITY?

you can make a big robo run round, on the ground, go bang bang! all by itself, kinda-sorta. but you can't make a robo FLY AROUND, on it's OWN, kinda-sorta... and go 'woosh woosh' launch missle, and bang bang! and such?

schtuuuupid oversight folks! seriously seriously schtuuuupid!

Ohms Nuttachai • 1 year ago

Yes. I was also surprised that no one in this show has any sense of danger from the air strike. That was so baffling when one flying mech almost obliterated 8 platoons.

The concept of air-superiority might be too alien in this world since we rarely see any kind of flying weapons except Shion's mech.

LesK • 1 year ago

ah, i almost forgot Full Metal Panic... in places... here and there... the mechs are shown to be vulnerable to your well trained and experienced foot-soldiers... other places... yeahhhh wayyy too 'godly' :>

LesK • 1 year ago

that's one of the weaknesses i've seen in the mecha anime genre for decades now. the source writers and the original anime screenwriters have too much concentration on the mecha being 'the big woo woo' in the genre. so everything else is entirely ignored or 'poo poo that's not good enough' blown off as old and outdated.

there's a few franchises that have outdone themselves with the 'everything else' though. Geass did great not just making mecha fly but showcasing how badly they can be used, abused, and how they can be beaten. the aircraft in Eureka 7 were stupendous. Knight's & Magic later in the season included aircraft.

so here and there the genre has had stuff that 'stood out from the rest' by not making mecha 'godly'. :)

Alexander D. Montblanc • 1 year ago

Which is why Code Geass was sort of ok in that respect, even though it only showed more air fighting by the end.

LesK • 1 year ago

mmhmmm! unfortunately Geass did leave the air to the 'super uber woo woo brand new model we just cooked up!' and there was of course so few of those. :> the giant killer space station idea was crazy cool and just... damn... seriously... damn! world bleeping domination platform there!

Alexander D. Montblanc • 1 year ago

Forget logic, the show is just a mecha show, and even though it actually does well enough on the political and strategic aspects of war, to the point where many of the things you see are also observable in the current russo-ukrainian war, it also has this glaring lack of touch on modern war capabilities. Drones is something you'd expect to see more of if they were trying to simulate war more realistically. The show has unmanned mecha, but not the og unmanned war machine, the drone, naval vessels are often just transports, and considering Japan is an archipelago, it would seem common sense to have actual naval battles, blockades and sieges. The only thing that seems excusable is nukes as there would be good reasons for not invoking their use in a setting like this, possibly also some national trauma for japanese to write a story where Japan could get nuked.

LesK • 1 year ago

true true, even as far back as 40 years ago the 'nukem till they glow' plan was just a really crazy hip-pocket one... mutually assured destruction and whatnot. even today the ICBM is getting... pretty dated and well... the US right now can pretty much guarantee anything 'way way' up there could be shot down before it makes with the mushrooms and such.

yeah the basic premises of warfare are fairly well represented in this show. you've gotta take the ground eventually and then keep ahold of it. so i think they're just concentrating a bit too hard on that aspect and ignoring what is above the ground.

where we're now just taking baby steps in unmanned aircraft and there's always a murmur or two of drone ships and whatnot. if you really don't need alot of space for folks to crawl around and run and sleep and eat
and whatnot a warship DOES get a good bit SMALLER. if you want to make the ship just a little bit smaller without folks on it, you can pack in some nice weapons and really really crazy fast engines and other bells n whistles.

so taking the parallels of AI controlled mecha (or whatever) up into the air and out to sea does seem to me to make a great deal of sense. the 'jump jets' the Americans are working with now in this series, to me, was a damn goofball oversight on everybody else's parts around this world. you don't HAVE to have legs and run around like a 'person'... but the mecha genre does love their Giant Humanoid Weapons.

Alexander D. Montblanc • 1 year ago

I didn't mean like drone marine vessels, just regular navy, manned vessels, and why wouldn't you factor that in on a show about war set in Japan.

what Im curious about is what happen to laser guns they would have completely dominated etc

Diorama Boy • 1 year ago

For an attempt at justification...the American troops didn't actually take the arrival of enemy AMAIMs into account. Amou and Alexei didn't actually have any military hardware
when they traveled to American territory because it was a diplomatic mission. The alliance was probably confident that their own strength would intimidate the NAC against playing dirty. But with people like German and Spears among them, the Americans actually went through with the false flag attack and succeeded. And here we are. The AMAIM platoons were dispatched to simply smoke out Amou and Alexei with gunfire then scare them into submission. Basically, a "there and back" operation. They wouldn't really need jets for something like that, cause their targets are traveling on foot, and you don't even need a bird's eye view when you've got an algorithm that can calculate their movements from given information. Brady Hound-based machines are also quite fast and agile too, as they're the only superpower-made AMAIM with propulsion systems. Humans can't fly-so capturing them in that situation would be child's play if enemy backup didn't arrive when it did.

LesK • 1 year ago

ok, so where did she launch from, how did she reach such a high altitude, how long did it take her, and WHY did NOBODY ... 'up there' see her? right now, with today's everyday systems, not even on military installations, we can track raindrops in the sky. rain. drops. why couldn't they track her? that's not a stealthy shape. i seriously doubt it's got the 'magic radar absorbing goop' slathered all over it. so unless they're in an operations area with absolutely jack-crap zero RADAR coverage, even for commercial aircraft tracking... somebody should have seen her 'up there'.

any ground operation of that size that does not have strategic overwatch coverage by drones... at a minimum... was planned by a person who probably needs to take their shoes off to count to twenty. the best way to track a human on foot is in the air not on the ground. lidar, radar, infra-red, low-light, total darkness, all of those 'woo woo gizmos' can be mounted onto a drone. i've personally seen a drone, target a single moose in Alaska, and that drone after being set to, 'follow that moose!' automatically, kept up with it, constantly, for three. days. like the old TV infomercial says, 'set it. and forget it!' the drone finally reached the 'oops! shit!' level of fuel in its tank and had to come home.

so if we can do something like that today, these seriously high-tech guys way in the future could launch a few drones at extremely high altitudes. they would have caught her and said, 'hey boss! there's something hinky over here! beep beep!'

annnd there you have it.

Diorama Boy • 1 year ago

Well, the AIs could have taken care any devices like that offscreen. Considering their core was in the mech, they wouldn't even have any connection problems. it was probably not thought about during scriptwriting but it's really possible. Remember in S1Ep9 when the resistance fought the Russians for the first time? The AIs hacked into the Russian tracking devices all over the forest and messed with the tracking software to give the Russian troops false info on where the resistance mechs were. So anything like that wouldn't be a problem at all.

LesK • 1 year ago

air superiority is based on a four-layer system.

the Earth. ground. up to bla bla bla height. that's the ground support aircraft's zone. Princess' fort. she flies round in her mech and shoots guys on the ground, zooms down and whacksem with her magic woo woo stick annnnd shoots em. somebody on the ground needs some 'death from above'... that's where Princess is zoomy zoomy around doing her thing.

next layer is the widest one. the biggest one. the busiest one. that's the air-to-air attack/support and minimal air to ground attack layer. this is the 'Top Gun' movies' bla bla bla dogfighting chasing shooting bla bla bla layer. you hold this layer so folks like Princess can't operate down there. /points at the Earth-ground/ because those ground support layer folks don't GET INTO THE REGION without flying near the air-to-air attack/support layer. and to HELP the bad guys shoot your good guys, folks attack your air-to-air layer and invade it. you also can shoot a little bit down onto the ground from this layer but it's not too accurate.

next layer is the weird one. the strategic support layer and tactical control layer. your radar planes flying around helping. your spying layer where drones and stuff take dirty pictures of you humping your underaged mistress in the lounge chair by her pool. annd said foreign government blackmails you into doing what they want with said dirty pictures. annnd command and control planes who are telling everybody what to do underneath them and permitting communications between the ground folks asking for help and giving target info annnd everybody else in the area who works for 'you'.

then there's the final layer, the layer that doesn't exist, the layer that's all secret hush hush boogeyman out in... space! spy satellites annnnd bla bla bla GPS orbiting info hubs annnd telecommunications devices allowing you to talk all around the world nigh on instantly and suchforth. annnd thermonuclear devices launched from the ground going wheeeeee! through space till they go... shiiiiiiiiiit... down to the Earth annnd big boom! everybody dead!

that's the gist of it folks. the NAC has lost alllllll credibility in this region because they don't have enough 'stuff' up in the air. points up. yeah, up there!

Alexander D. Montblanc • 1 year ago

Forget aircraft, what happened to America's navy where they aren't even mentioned in a war happening in a group of islands lol. World's largest navy my ass.

LesK • 1 year ago

hmm. yeah. but a navy really isn't what you need right here. the ground has already been taken. the borders have already been set. things fluctuate wildly now and again, but 'Japan' is relatively stable amongst those who conquered it.

if you bring a navy into it, the Pacific is a rather wide open and long trip by ship from the North American West Coast and whatnot. depending on how far South American things reach in this version of things.

but, to 'Japan' the Asians/Chinese etc. are right. next. door.

the Australians or whatever they're called here, oceanians or something... they're down South, but closer to 'Japan' than the Americas.

the Euros... i guess they're coming in from Russia and whatnot. so they're right next door too.

also, never forget the Americas have two Oceans to deal with when it comes to a navy. most other 'continents'... well except for Africa... only have one Ocean to deal with.

but yeah, a bit of a naval presence would be useful. might prevent some of that smuggling and supply/transportation routes our intrepid freedom fighters have used to move stuff around.

Alexander D. Montblanc • 1 year ago

There would still be situations where you would use the navy to blockade ports, and also they would be using japanese ports in their controlled areas as a base, not ferrying them back and forth from America (you know like the US actually already does irl).

F for Masaki. A true hero and truly earned his right to be part of the foundation of New Japan.

I've been getting the feeling that we have no idea who's gonna die in the series for some time, and this one felt well-delivered. From the preview it seems like they're gonna focus on the aftermath for a bit as well, which is well-deserved despite him being a side character.

Motoharu Tsuchimikado • 1 year ago

Isn't he the one who wanted to get girls?now he can have harem in the next life

RIP Masaki

Jerome W Bison • 1 year ago

5:06 Pretty much guessed that in the previous ep. But the main questions is, why did Watt help them escape!?!!

5:21 Capricorn!?!! Wonder if that is a branch of Ghost's AI!?!!
12:03 Helluva throw.
14:57 They may not travel in different directions to their targets, but just love Anime missiles.
17:06 Damn!!! I felt that.
17:33 Dammit!!! Just knew this was coming because of their conversation at 9:00. RIP Eiji Umasaki.😔

18:17 Kenbu looks like it just went Gawd mode!!!

Looks like we all know what the final arc of the series is. If the info is correct from one source, 4 episodes left with a 13 Ep count. Unless they will be another season.

Since this is an original series, no way to tell how this will end. Me personally, I don't expect a Iron-Blooded Orphans like ending with this series.

But, you hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Alexander D. Montblanc • 1 year ago

This show is not that hard to read. Brad let them go because he wants to test his new toy on the field against worthy opponents, so he's basically playing along this stupid plan just to get a dopamine hit.
